Two Iranian diplomats detained by US occupying forces in Iraq are released and handed over to Iranian officials in Baghdad.

Seven other Iranian nationals who had been in US captivity have also been handed over to Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad, Hassan Kazemi Qomi.

According to Iran's broadcaster, the two Iranian diplomats were among the five others who were arrested in Arbil on January 11, 2007 as US forces broke into Iran's consulate in the northern Kurdish city.

The names of the released diplomats are given as Hamidreza Askari and Mousa Chegeni.

The nationals are expected to return to Iran later Friday.
