About 100 University of California, Berkeley, students rallied Monday to protest the treatment of a UCLA student who was stunned with a Taser gun by campus police in a scuffle in a library on the Southern California campus.

Officers at UCLA used the Taser on Mostafa Tabatabainejad, 23, of Sacramento, when he refused to show ID while studying in the Powell Library about 11 p.m. Nov. 14, according to published reports.

Other students captured the incident on cell phone cameras, and videos have been shown on the Internet and television news.

Acting UCLA Chancellor Norman Abrams has requested an independent investigation into the Taser incident.

UC Berkeley student organizer Snehal Shingavi said students want to make sure the investigation is conducted openly and fairly. The use of force against their fellow student was not justified, Shingavi said.
