Torture Scandal is a Sophisticated Psy-Op
First of all, it didn't take a military genius to figure out, from the start of the war, that the post-war occupation of Iraq would be a disaster.
That disaster would happen because the WAR WASN'T OVER.
Imagine going into Germany in 1945, to occupy it, while some kind of war was still being waged. While the local population was not "pacified."
THEY WILL WELCOME US WITH OPEN ARMS didn't cut it when Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq, and it certainly doesn't cut it now.
In an atmosphere of guerilla warfare, many strange and cruel and horrible things are bound to happen.
As far as the torture of prisoners is concerned, the official surprise in Washington is just a pose. Torture is one of the strategies of war.
I do not say that to justify war or torture, but merely to point out that the Disney-action hero-video-game innocence of the American people is absurd.
I believe that some of the torture photos are real, some are faked, and some we will never see, because they are too horrible.
The astonishment at some of the standard torture techniques---sleep deprivation, forced exercise to the point of exhaustion, continuous loud music (remember Waco?), being stripped naked, being denied food and water, sexual assault---is also a pose in official circles.
And part of the astonishment of the American people really amounts to: "Why did you show us the photos? We don't want to know. We have a deal---you win the war and we keep our heads buried in the consumer malls and suck in our favored standard of living."
There is another deal too. The American people are NOT supposed to be given any reason to see through their own flag-waving, go-go patriotism. That thin veil is not supposed to be torn away.
Of course, mindless patriotism is a central component of the glue that holds together the American people in their belief that EVERYTHING IS OKAY.
So who leaked the photos and why?
On one level, this leak was inevitable. All sorts of military/intell personnel inside the Iraq torture facility were taping and snapping digital photos. A computer was only a step away.
There was also a long Red Cross report on "prison conditions," now some months old.
Given the fact that, in this day and age, photos would emerge and media outlets somewhere in the world (and internet sites) would release those photos, we are staring at part of an intentional OP that goes back to 9/11, when the crusader (Bush) was duped into following his own highly predictable inclination----GET SADDAM, INVADE IRAQ.
Again, it doesn't take a genius to see that certain inevitable outcomes would result:
There would be a post-invasion disaster, during the occupation phase of a whole nation. Guerilla warfare. How would you feel if the sanctions imposed (after Gulf War 1) had led to the deaths of somewhere between half a million and million children in your own country?
Another outcome would be the entirely standard imposition of torture on captured prisoners in Iraq---and the exposure of that practice---especially given the fact that a number of nations did not support the US government in its war.
You can be sure they are privately breaking out the bubbly inside the EU ruling structure, as their central economic competitor, the US, is taking it on the chin.
This whole 9/11-Iraq OP is aimed at demoralizing the population of the US as well. And it's working.
Pre-Gulf War 2, the Pentagon, as usual, was aching for a war. The Pentagon is always aching for a war. "We have weapons to test, places to go, people to kill." The so-called neo-con advisors were set with a plan to take over the whole Middle East and liberate Israel from its increasingly untenable position. Within the White House, a number of people were drooling over the idea that God himself was guiding them toward victory.
That victory could take several shapes, not the least of which would be a run-up toward Armageddon, the great Rapture in heaven, and the great Tribulation for those non-born-agains left behind here on Earth.
For these types, there really isn't that much difference between the prurience that festers underneath their moral puritanism (leading to pinhole views of naked women in motel rooms and porn tapes), and the impulses that yield sexually explicit torture photos...
All severe fundamentalists of any faith eventually wind up with prurience as their backup.
At any rate, all the pieces were in place. And with Bush in charge of the executive branch, it was a slam dunk.
Everything we have been seeing over the past three years has been as predictable as a bear in the woods going after a planted jar of honey.
And if so, then who would have planned this OP at the highest levels? A group whose goals definitely did NOT involve strengthening the most powerful nation in the world. A group for whom the further weakening of the US would be a major payoff.
What is the main counter-trend on the planet to the unbridled empire-dreams of the US? Is it the triumph of some other single nation (like China)? Or is it the submerging of every nation under a "humane" system of global management, in which only the fiction of separate nations survives---in order to assuage the masses?
You can be sure that this proponent of global control employs the time-honored tradition of cutouts (fronts) to conceal itself. Would it walk out into the light of day and publicly announce its ambitions to rule?
Yes, cutouts. Layers of them. Greater power hidden behind lesser power.
Within this system, one of the more effective operational can-do wings is the agency known as the CIA. Which has had a significant presence inside those torture facilities in Iraq.
