Politics and the seat-belt
bill Louisville Kentucky Courier Journal | March 31 2006 Gov. Ernie Fletcher and Senate President David Williams are only concerned about the $11 million in federal money and not about the well-being of Kentuckians. The horror stories of near-fatal accidents where seat belts were not used are merely a tactic to justify the passing of their "police state" bill. There are equally horrific stories to be told about cancer deaths and obesity disabilities, but are they planning any bills that will arrest or fine tobacco users? Maybe bills that would ticket fast-food patrons? Maybe you could come up with a bill that could force every Kentuckian to spend at least an hour a day at the local gym. . . . Better yet, stop the manufacture of tobacco products and ban fast food in the state. Think of the lives and the money you could be saving us. The seat belt has been provided. If you are concerned about your welfare in the event of an accident, put it on. This is about freedom of choice and government control. These are personal decisions, and government should butt out. No one forces anyone not to wear a seat belt. The Governor and our legislators should spend their time and our money doing something worthwhile for a change. Take care of mine safety, provide adequate health care for all (which the Governor certainly enjoys), provide heating assistance for the less fortunate, lower education and energy costs, and other issues taxing our overburdened pocketbooks. We die daily on foreign soil to allow others the right to choose, while we steadily lose our rights here. Someone care to explain this? BILL ELDER Louisville 40258 Senate 'playing politics' Instead, they should have addressed that question to Senate President David Williams, whose GOP-dominated Senate tacked the bill, as an amendment, onto legislation that protects some of its priorities. To me, that's the definition of "playing politics."
