More Surveillance Cameras Being Added Around Pittsburgh

AP | March 31 2006

The city is boosting its use of surveillance cameras.

More than 100 cameras used by PennDOT, the Port Authority, and those around PNC Park and Heinz Field, plus new ones to be installed, will feed into the city's Office of Emergency Management.

The city is also talking with the University of Pittsburgh about linking with its camera systems.

The system will also detect misuse, but will mainly be used if there is ever a need for evacuations, city officials said Wednesday.

Mayor Bob O'Connor said the system will be ready by baseball's All-Star Game on July 11 at PNC Park.

The project will cost about $1.1 million in federal money.
