Wife of Missing China Activist Seeks Help

AP | March 22 2006

The wife of a Chinese AIDS activist who disappeared while under police guard publicly appealed for help in finding him on Tuesday, expressing fears for his health.

Zeng Jinyan spoke at a news conference at a Beijing hotel _ an unusual step in a society where police often break up such privately organized gatherings.

Zeng's husband, Hu Jia, was last seen on Feb. 16 while under house arrest after he joined activists who were holding a hunger strike to protest violence against dissidents.

"I'm afraid that he's being beaten in a basement somewhere," Zeng said. She appealed to the government to release any information on Hu's status.

Hu, who suffers from hepatitis B, is one of China's most prominent AIDS activists.

The U.N. AIDS agency has raised the issue of his fate with the Chinese government.
