Smile, kids, you may be under surveillance

Tri City News | March 11 2006

Video cameras can be used on school property – but not in washrooms, change rooms or private conference rooms.

School trustees approved a policy at the regular school board meeting Tuesday that places strict limits on surveillance cameras.

Cameras can be used to deter vandalism and safety but only after approval by the school principal and the School District 43 superintendent.

The data gathered by cameras - film or digital - must be stored in a locked file cabinet or on a computer with limited access. The data must be erased within a month, unless there is a need to keep it longer.

The superintendent can supersede the rules, “if the need is pressing and outweighs the privacy interest of the student or other person likely to be observed,” according to the policy.

Parents can see recordings, on request, if their children are involved.
