Lee's call for NSA spying info rebuffed

Oakland Tribune | March 4 2006

Although the House Intelligence Committee agreed Thursday to expand an inquiry into the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program, an Oakland Democrat's broader effort was killed on a party-line vote.

U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, denounced the defeat of her privileged resolution, which called on the administration to give Congress all information on the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance.

"It is our duty as lawmakers to demand oversight and accountability in Washington," she said in a news release, adding Republicans' failure to demand more information up front "reflects their continuing disregard for conducting any meaningful oversight."

Lee had introduced the resolution in December as a response to White House claims that the president

had authority to approve a warrantless domestic spying program.

"Congress must send the message that the Bush administration can no longer exhibit such blatant disregard for America's Constitution and its laws," Lee said Friday.

Under the arrangement announced Thursday by the Intelligence Committee, a subcommittee will seek detailed briefings on the program while the full committee launches a review of domestic espionage laws to see if they require reform.
