U.S. withdrawal from Iraq in 2006?

UPI | March 18 2005

NEW YORK, March 18 (UPI) -- A top Pentagon official says U.S. troops could start leaving Iraq early next year, the New York Times reported Friday.

Gen. Richard A. Cody, the Army vice chief of staff, declined to give specific figures, but other military leaders suggested troop levels could drop to around 105,000 by early next year from the current 150,000.

A decision on withdrawing troops could come next month, Cody said.

The size and timing of any withdrawal depends on the state of Iraqi forces. The Pentagon says 145,000 members of Iraqi military and police forces are fully trained and equipped for their assigned jobs, a figure some reject as inflated.

Iraqi forces have begun taking over more security roles. In Baghdad, four Iraqi battalions now have full authority over 10 neighborhoods.
