New evidence over Diana death car
Comment: We already knew that the cars were switched. The question is, why was the second car used when it had been mysteriously 'stolen' days before, giving the masterminds of the assassination the opportunity to install the remote control device which enabled them to veer the car into the pillar, a method familiar to MI6.
FLASHBACK: Diana's death likened to MI6 plot
FLASHBACK: Archive - Murder of Diana
Fresh speculation over the death of Princess Diana has begun with the release of official documents written after the 1997 crash in which she died.
Two memos between officials suggest the car which Diana and Dodi Al Fayed intended to travel in failed to start.
They say the couple instead got into a Mercedes driven by Henri Paul, who was three times over the alcohol limit.
But another memo suggests the switch was a last-minute plan to divert the paparazzi.
All three were killed in a Paris underpass on August 31, 1997.
Getaway car
The papers, released by the Cabinet Office under the Freedom of Information Act, contain memos between officials and politicians, including Tony Blair, after the event.
Two of the released documents indicate the car in which Diana and Dodi meant to leave Paris's Ritz Hotel in failed to start.
A memo to Prime Minister Tony Blair on August 31 said the couple were "immediately subject to media attention" when they arrived at the Ritz and were surrounded by journalists when they left.
"They tried to leave quickly but the first hire car failed to start," the document, whose author is not revealed, said.
"The second car then left the hotel at speed. It travelled along a stretch of the river and entered the tunnel in which the car crashed."
Another document signed "Jay" was sent on the same day to Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, who was in Singapore.
Last minute change
Sir Michael Jay was the ambassador to France at the time.
It said the pair left the Ritz in a different car "because, apparently, their getaway car failed to start, they got into another nearby car driven by a Ritz driver".
But a paper sent by Sir Michael to the Foreign Office later in the year, on September 23, says the switch had been "a last minute change of plan aimed at diverting the waiting paparazzi."
The same memo detailed how the Harrods boss and Dodi's father, Mohamed Al Fayed, had employed a UK pathologist to challenge results from tests showing high levels of alcohol in blood samples from Henri Paul.
The new test confirmed the alcohol level and also revealed the chauffeur had been taking anti-depressants.
