Afghans assured of release from Guantanamo Bay purgatory

All 96 Afghan citizens being held in the United States’ Guantanamo prison camp will be brought back to Afghanistan “very soon”, a top government official said on Wednesday.

“The group includes 94 Afghan nationals, a Tajik and a Libyan who both have Afghan citizenship,” said Abdul Jabar Sabet, Ministry of Interior’s legal advisor, who had just returned from a visit to the camp.

Sabet did not give a specific date for their return but the process could take a few months, with the prisoners returning in batches.

“Most of the men will be released on their return to Afghanistan, “an official said on condition of anonymity.

Sabet headed a government delegation that spent 10 days at the prison in Cuba, meeting the Afghan prisoners and getting information about their cases.

It concluded that “a number of them shouldn’t remain in jail any longer,” Sabet said.

“The other prisoners with relatively bigger charges would be judged by legal authorities after repatriation,” he said.

The delegation had returned to Afghanistan before three of the prisoners in the camp committed suicide on Saturday, fuelling calls for the controversial facility to be shut down. There are around 460 prisoners in the camp, all of them arrested as part of the US-led “war on terror” that was launched after toppling of the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Only 10 of the prisoners have been formally charged as terror suspects since the camp opened in early 2002 while none has gone on trial.

The Afghan government has been pushing for the freedom of the Afghan inmates and a few dozen have already returned home.
