Naples Nazi quote has district issuing apologies

What was meant to be a joke in a high school yearbook now has the Naples School District issuing apologies. Six little words printed in black and white are stirring up angry emotions much like they did more than 60 years ago.

Most people flip through the pages of their high school yearbook with fond memories. But for some students and teachers at Naples Central High School those memories are now tainted by this quote, "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer." Written in German, it means, "One People, One Empire, One Leader."

German leader Adolf Hitler spoke these words during World War II.

"I just wanted to put a joke out there that they're a bunch of Nazis," said Galen Barbour, a former Senior at Naples Central High School.

17-year-old Galen Barbour submitted Hitler's quote at the start of the school year. It originated as a Nazi era slogan. But that was not Barbour's inspiration, instead he says he was merely protesting against the school's strict policies.

"The school is just this playground for discipline now. They'll bust you for going to the bathroom without a hall pass. They'll bust you for having a coffee mug... I used the quote because to me Hitler in ways represents a historical police state," said Barbour.

But Barbour's form of protest sent chills through the school building.

"It was very shocking and I was saddened by it," said Brenda Keith, Superintendent of the Naples Central School District.

Brenda Keith says Barbour wasn't punished, instead he was educated. Barbour sat down with three teachers from the high school who had personal ties to the holocaust.

"I'm sure it was an impulsive decision by the student and I'm sure that student probably regrets it by now," said Keith.

Barbour says he never thought his joke would stir up this kind of reaction.

"I didn't mean to hurt anyone Jewish that's for sure. I didn't mean to hurt anyone," said Barbour.

The school district and the yearbook staff sent out letters of apology to parents and students. Superintendent Keith says more faculty advisors will be added to the yearbook staff to make sure controversial quotes will not be overlooked again.
