The six world powers meeting to discuss how to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions have started drawing up a new draft UN Security Council resolution, a British Foreign Office official said Monday.
John Sawers, who chaired the meeting, described it as "productive" and said there would be further contacts between the diplomats on the draft later this week.

He was speaking after the break-up of the London talks, which were attended by officials from the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia.

The meeting came after the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog, confirmed Thursday that Iran had ignored Security Council demands to stop enriching uranium and had expanded its nuclear programme.

"We had a productive first discussion of the next steps following the director general of the IAEA's confirmation that Iran has failed to comply with SCR (Security Council resolution) 1737," Sawers said in a statement.

"We began work on a new Security Council resolution building on resolution 1737.

"We also considered how best to re-engage with Iran. We are all committed to seeking a negotiated solution."

But he added that no firm decisions were taken.

There had been signs of potential disagreement ahead of the meeting, with Russia distancing itself from talk of using military options against Iran.

After US Vice-President Dick Cheney said last week that "all options are still on the table", Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov expressed concern that "forecasts and suppositions of a possible attack on Iran have become more frequent".

But Britain insisted that the international community remained united in its determination to persuade Tehran to back down over the nuclear programme.
