Dallas neighborhood turns to surveillance cameras DALLAS Residents of one Texas neighborhood have agreed to install video cameras on their streets and alleyways in an attempt to reduce crime. Neighbors in the Richland Park Estates subdivision in Dallas voted this week to share the cost of the system. They also will monitor the video for criminal activity. Homeowners association president Dick Becker says crime is out of control throughout the area and that police resources are stretched thin. He says neighbors were looking for a way to help themselves. Dallas police say they welcome the system as a crime deterrent and possible source of evidence for investigators. Surveillance cameras have been employed as a crime-fighting tool in numerous United States cities. But they're often accompanied by debate over their effectiveness and privacy concerns. One privacy advocate questions whether asking neighbors to monitor surveillance videos presents a risk of profiling and misuse. ---------------------------------------------------
