Violent Attacks Erupt In Greece

Around three-hundred students have battled police and attacked cars and stores in Greece in the latest unrest sparked by the police killing of a 15-year-old boy.

The riots in the Greek city of Salonika follow clashes in which thousands of people demonstrated against police and rampaged through Athens and other cities.

Scores of businesses were destroyed, cars torched and burning barricades were built.

Gangs of self-styled anarchists threw Molotov cocktails, rocks and bottles towards police.

In retaliation the officers created a cloud of tear gas which hung in the air, sending passers by scurrying for cover.

The uproar in several cities began within hours of the death of a 15-year-old boy shot by police in Exarchia, which is seen as the home base of the anarchists.

Despite the arrest of two police officers for the killing of the teenager, the Greek Communist Party announced plans for a mass rally in central Athens this evening.
