Queues begin at 3am for the £5 'I'm not a plastic bag' bag UK
Daily Mail If anyone had said a year ago that people — fashionable, environmentally concerned people — would start queuing outside a supermarket at 3am to buy a shopping bag, they would have been laughed out of court. But that is exactly what happened today when the Anya Hindmarch bag phenomenon reached its climax. Twenty thousand of the limited edition bags went on sale this morning at Sainsbury’s stores throughout the UK, with just over 400 available at the Gloucester Road store. All 20,000 were sold out before 10am. At the front of the queue was Irfan Bambur, 20, from Gloucester Road, who said: "I got here at 3am to make sure I can get a bag for my little sister. She’s 14 and really wants one. Hopefully this will make her one of the cool kids in school." Another early bird was 34-year-old Suzie Nash. She said: "I’m here because they’re reusable and good for the environment but also because it’s a stylish accessory everyone has to have." As the queue began inside the store and snaked outside, Elizabeth Gregoire, a 21-year-old student, said: "This is one of those rare items that is environmentally friendly and manages to still look good. I don’t like plastic bags and this means I can also have the latest fashion." The £5 bag is the result of a collaboration between Anya Hindmarch, the global social change movement We Are What We Do, and the creative agency Antidote. Its aim is to highlight the issue of reusable bags. Some bags were released for sale at Hindmarch stores last month and they flew off the shelves with many later appeared on eBay selling for up to £175. Hindmarch, who was at Sainsbury’s today, said: "I’m absolutely thrilled. We designed it two years ago and it’s taken quite a long time to get into the shops. People do seem to give a damn, even if it’s just because it’s a cheap bag. "Whatever their reasons, it’s like they’re walking around with a giant billboard denouncing plastic bags. "We had an original order for 20,000 to be made, but we weren’t even sure whether they would sell. It is tempting to increase the amount of bags on sale to ease people’s frustration and to get the bags out there and spreading the message as well. Unfortunately, we said they are limited edition though and they will be. "When I first heard the bags were being resold for such high money on the internet I was very upset, but then I realised that it is creating a frenzy around the bag and more importantly around the environmental issue. Anything that promotes the environment can only be a good thing." The Sainsbury’s launch comes two days before the company’s first Make The Difference days. These will occur once a month aimed at encouraging positive action and change across a range of environmental and ethical issues. The first day, Friday, will see Sainsbury’s become the first big UK supermarket to stop giving out free disposable carrier bags. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
