Nato is looking into reports of dozens of civilian deaths following an airstrike on two hijacked fuel trucks in northern Afghanistan.

At least 90 people were killed in the blast - including up to 40 locals, Afghan officials claimed.

Relatives of the victims gathered outside a provincial hospital to wait for news.

"My brother was burnt when the aircraft bombed the fuel tankers. I don't know whether he is dead or alive," villager Ghulam Yahya was quoted as saying.
