Prince Charles Wants Military to Protect Royal Residences

UPI | September 15 2004

LONDON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Britain's Prince Charles wants the Army to take over protecting royal residences like Buckingham Palace, recently breached by a demonstrator.

The request by the Prince of Wales comes after a member of Fathers 4 Justice, a group that seeks equal visitation rights for fathers, scaled a ladder alongside Buckingham Palace's main balcony last weekend. It is the third such breach in 18 months, Hello Magazine reported Wednesday.

The heir to the crown is apparently worried that the royal protection squad, set up after an intruder managed to make his way into the Queen's bedroom in 1982, has grown complacent.

His mother, Queen Elizabeth, watched the Buckingham Palace balcony incident on TV from her Scottish retreat, Balmoral, and is understood to be deeply concerned.
