US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Washington will continue supporting Georgia and also train its military despite Russian objections.

"Georgia is providing troops in Afghanistan and we are training troops to be able to go to Afghanistan," Clinton told the Echo of Moscow radio.

Clinton admitted that the US and Russia were not in total conformity on Georgia, but she noted that her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, had not mentioned any objection to US military aid to Georgia.

"We will help the Georgian people to feel like they can protect themselves," she added, without giving further details.

The United States has spent tens of millions of dollars on military aid for the Georgian army over the last years.

Tbilisi tried to take back the two breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia last August. Russia's tough response put a stop to the move, and led to a short war between the two neighbors.
