Internet infrastructure headed for meltdown Nick Farrell THE team leader who designed and developed ARPANET, the world's first major computer packet network says that the Internet infrastructure is about to burst. Dr Lawrence Roberts said that if it's not fixed soon, the expansion of Internet traffic could outrun our ability to pay for it. He said that since the Interweb started traffic has doubled each year and basic router technology has only just managed to support it. This is mostly thanks to speed improvements resulting from the improvement in semiconductors and the adoption of fibre. However the bottle neck has become the development of router technology which can't keep up with the increased demand.
In an interview with Internet Evolution, Roberts said that the cost of Internet capacity will double every three years without some key new innovation in router technology. The economy could not support this for long. He warned that when packet routers become overloaded they seriously damages all the traffic, data, voice, and video and if the state of things does not improve this damage will be seen.
