| LA joins San Francisco Lights Out effort UPI Los Angeles officials have decided to join San Francisco in an hourlong demonstration of energy use reduction. In both cities -- and others that are planning to join the effort -- residents will be asked to turn off all non-essential lights between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Oct. 20, The Los Angeles Times reported. Government offices and other buildings are to do the same. The original Earth Hour was held in Australia in March, with at least 2.2 million people participating in Sydney. Electrical use dropped by 10 percent and organizers said that was the equivalent of stopping 40,000 cars from an operating for an hour.
Brian Scott, operating director for Lights Out, said organizers hope to show people that everyone can take steps to reduce emissions that contribute to global warming and help save energy. It is not an insurmountable thing, he said. Wherever this message can get out, it's a good thing.
