New WTC 7 Building Completed

A piece of New York's terror-scarred skyline was restored yesterday as a new skyscraper: 7 World Trade Center was topped off with a 20-foot-long beam of steel signed by Gov. Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg.

"Today, the last building that came down on Sept. 11, 7 WTC, is the first to reach its peak height. And like the Freedom Tower, it will stand taller than its predecessor did on Sept. 11, 2001," Pataki said, flanked by dozens of construction workers.

The new, 52-story tower replaces a building that collapsed as a result of fire sparked by the terror strikes on the main World Trade Center site directly across the street. It was the last structure destroyed, toppling hours after the Twin Towers.

The tower at 7 WTC will be ready for occupancy by early 2006.
