Reality TV - The Ultimate Degradation

Hazel W.M. McKinlay | October 13 2004

Reality TV has plumbed new depths with a show called ‘The Farm’ featuring the dregs of “celebrities” including ex-footballer Stan Collymore, famous for domestic violence, has-been rapper Vanilla Ice, desperate for credibility and Rebecca Loos, notorious for her kiss n’ tell affair with David Beckham, which almost destroyed his marriage. The programme is set on a farm, to introduce bestiality to mainstream viewing.

The gutter press ran with the headline; ‘Rebecca Pleasures A Pig’ and I wouldn’t have believed it, had I not been skimming the channels and paused at ‘The Farm’ long enough to witness Rob (Vanilla Ice) being asked to wash a horse’s sheath. He declined, but magician’s wife, Debbie McGee gladly volunteered, calling the others “wimps” and proceeded to gently massage the steed’s genitalia. She was advised to cover her head, should the horse get over-excited!

Whether or not this is a part of farm animal’s personal hygiene, was it really necessary to film it in graphic detail? At this point I switched off and ran to the kitchen for a sick-bag but I dread to think how much further producers are prepared to go with this series. I’m worried about the sheep and so is the RSPCA. Needless to say, there have been many complaints… but who’s actually listening, or more to the point, what sort of degenerates are watching?
