Security Scans For Entry To The UK
News of the World | October 4 2004
More than 90 million people visiting Britain each year are to have their faces electronically scanned in a massive Security Upgrade.
Cameras will be installed in ports and airports over the next two years as part of a programme to provide the UK with the most advanced border security in the world.
The system uses sophisticated digital cameras to scan eyes and record detailed images of the irises, which are as unique as fingerprints.
Facial recognition software will also measure visitors features.
The System will become fully operational by 2007.
Home Secretary David Blunkett said "Secure and effective border controls are vital."
"That is why our immigration service enforces our border controls 24 hours a day, all year round."
"Our challenge is to safeguard our citizens against terrorism, serious and organised crime and illegal immigration while at the same time facilitating entry for legitimate travellers".
