The Mall of America will carry out its first-ever lockdown drills this morning and tonight.

The exercises are scheduled for just after opening time and just before closing time: 10:05 a.m. and 9:25 p.m. in order to create the least amount of shopper disruption.

Mall of America security and Bloomington police have spent the past few months visiting each tenant at the mall in preparing the new lockdown crisis plan. The primary goal of a lockdown, according to mall officials, is to "minimize potential victims during crisis situations and buy time for the police to arrive and defeat the problem."

"Mall of America is an international tourist destination for more than 40 million visitors annually," said megamall security Capt. Heidi Buegler. "It is the security department's job to keep those 40 million visitors safe every day and with this new lockdown plan, we have a procedure that will help us to be prepared for any unique circumstances we may encounter."
