Ron Paul for president? Signs say so Journal
& Courier Take a casual drive through any number of Lafayette neighborhoods and you may see yard signs urging you vote for Congressman Ron Paul for president. Take that same drive through West Lafayette neighborhoods, especially near Purdue University, and you'll see even more of those signs. But just who is Ron Paul? He's a 10-term Texas congressman -- and M.D. -- whose politics are more Libertarian than Republican. In a Republican debate held in May, Paul was declared the winner by two polls. He wants to abolish the U.S. Department of Education and get the federal government out of schools. He's a firm opponent of the income tax and isn't a big fan of the Department of Homeland Security. He supports tighter controls on the border and wants to end birthright citizenship.
He's pro-life. He's anti-war. And according to some polls, he has 6 percent of likely Republicans' votes. Earlier this month, Paul set a one-day GOP fundraising record when he pocketed $4.3 million on the Internet from 38,000 donors. A poll conducted between Nov. 14 and Nov. 18 by CNN and a New Hampshire television station said Paul placed fourth among likely New Hampshire Republican voters. Even so, few expect Paul's candidacy to gather enough steam to make much of a difference to the outcome of the primaries. But he's become an interesting candidate to watch.
