| Senior Republican tips Hillary Clinton to win Alex Spillius A conservative through and through, Dick Armey could scarcely be more different from the liberal New York senator, but he paid a glowing tribute to her intellect and political skills. "Hillary Clinton won't stumble. She is probably the most able politician in the race, and the most able politician in America," he told a meeting of diplomats and businessmen in Washington. In a backhanded compliment, he added: "What the rest of the candidates need to understand is that one, she is smarter than they are, and two, she is meaner."
A Texan congressman for 18 years, Mr Armey was house majority leader during the "Republican Revolution" in the 1990s and was the chief author of the Republican Contract with America, the document that crystallised modern conservative doctrine. The wearer of a 10-gallon hat who once famously said, "I've been to Europe once. I don't have to go again", Mr Armey reflected the grudging but rarely uttered respect within the Republican ranks towards Mrs Clinton. He said: "Once she resolves a course of action in her mind, she is not going to be wishy-washy; the world will quickly learn that 'this is it, she means business' and there is something to said for that."
