Capitol Checkpoints to Return in January

UPI | November 11 2004

More than a dozen automotive security checkpoints surrounding the U.S. Capitol have been dismantled following the reduction of the federal threat advisory.

The Capitol Police Department erected the security precautions on Washington, D.C., streets that move through the capitol complex three months ago after the Bush Department of Homeland Security raised the threat warning to "orange" for the Capitol and financial institutions in Washington, New Jersey, and New York City.

The threat advisory was reduced to "yellow" Thursday.

However, the Capitol Police plan to deploy randomly temporary checkpoints around the Capitol in the future and discussions are reportedly underway to redeploy the entire host of checkpoints for the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration.

Such a move is likely to be opposed by District of Columbia officials, who opposed the initial round of checkpoints when they were set up in August.
