Immigration Reform Act Doomed to Fail Mary Benoit How many Americans remember the promises that were made prior to the passage of the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, that after amnesty was granted to roughly 3.1 million illegal immigrants, the U.S. government would implement strict immigration laws to prevent our border from busting out-of-control once again? Twenty one years later, the borders are as porous as ever. An estimated 9,000 illegal aliens cross our borders on a daily basis (that is an average of 375 every hour), and only 1/3 of them are apprehended by an overworked and overwhelmed Border Patrol. In 1986 the government estimated that roughly 1 million illegal immigrants would qualify for amnesty (but resulted in 3.1 million), today the number of illegal immigrants is exceedingly higher, with estimates ranging from 12-20 million. William King, Jr. — who once headed the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service — can't help but see the similarities between IRCA and the so-called immigration "reform" bill that is currently being discussed today. King, a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Border Patrol, has criticized the Comprehensive Immigration and Reform Act of 2007 (S. 1348), claiming it would result in "failure."
But while the White House insists that S. 1348 does not include an amnesty provision, Mr. King disagrees. Providing a path toward legal citizenship, along with failing to properly secure the border, will only result in an even greater influx in illegal immigration, much like what happened in 1986. Speaking on S. 1348 King said, "It's time Congress and the administration find the strength of purpose to do what the American public has been calling for for decades now, and that is to secure our borders and to develop realistic interior enforcement programs."
