Surveillance camera debate could come to Cape Girardeau Ryan Tate CAPE GIRARDEAU & SIKESTON, Mo. - Cape Girardeau city leaders may face an issue of putting surveillance cameras in different parts of the city. A few weeks ago, city leaders met with some Downtown business owners and that was one of the topics of discussion.
Cape Girardeau City Manager Doug Leslie says the idea is "just in the discussion stages" at this point. Sikeston installed surveillance cameras throughout the city last year, at a cost of more than $100,000. Some of that money for the cost came from grants. "It is a valuable tool for us," Sikeston Department of Public Safety Chief Drew Juden said. "We see it as a plus for us and a plus for our customers. It's also a plus for the police department. It adds to the tools to take care of the City," Cup 'N' Cork owner Barry Robinson said. But some disagree. One business owner says the money could be better used to pay for other things in town, like infrastructure needs. Sikeston currently has 23 surveillance cameras in town. Chief Juden says another nine are on the way. ---------------------------------------------------
