The Islamic State of Iraq has announced the armed group has gunned down an American Super Cobra aircraft in northern Baghdad.

In a statement on its website, the armed group declared the US military aircraft was shot down with anti-aircraft weapons over the Alskak district of Iraq's Salahuddin province.

The group believes there are no survivors of the crash, saying the attack chopper was completely destroyed.

In its statement, the group also claimed another military plane was seen flying overhead, but flew away from the scene of fighting after faced with what the statement said was "our brothers' resistance".

The US military has not yet commented on the incident, but the statement released by the Islamic State of Iraq said there were many witnesses to the crash.

The Islamic State of Iraq is an umbrella organization composed of 17 insurgency groups in Iraq and was established in 2006.
