One person was killed and two others wounded after a California college student opened fire following a row over a PlayStation 2 video game, police said Tuesday.

The shooting took place late Monday near the campus of California State University in Fresno, 219 miles (352 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, police said.

The gunman, identified as 19-year-old criminology student Jonquel Brooks, was at large Tuesday after police had initially surrounded a campus apartment complex believing he was inside.

But police played down the possibility of a Virginia Tech-style planned killing, saying the shooting arose out of an argument between individuals over a video game.

"The information we have is that there was some kind of dispute involving a PlayStation video game console," Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer told reporters.

Brooks was wanted for murder and assault with a deadly weapon, he added.

Police said the shootings took place around 11:00 pm local time Monday (0600 GMT Tuesday).

California State University Campus Police said in a statement that the campus was open and Tuesday classes would be conducted on schedule.

"The Fresno police department has indicated that campus is safe for classes," the statement said.

Local media reports said the dead person was a 19-year-old former student at the college. The two other victims, aged 19 and 22, were released from hospital after treatment for gunshot wounds.

The college shooting comes less than a month after student Cho Seung-Hui shot dead 32 people at Virginia Tech University on April 16, the deadliest school shooting in US history.
