27 Per Cent of Russians Believe NATO Is Enemy — Poll

Mos News | May 30 2006

About one third of the respondents (27 per cent) believe that Russia is an enemy of NATO, according to a poll by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center, Angus Reid website, which specializes in polls and market research, reported Tuesday.

Another 35 per cent are not so pessimistic, they say Russia is partner of the military alliance, while 9 percent thought Russia was in fact a member of The North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Adults in Russia hold differing views on the role of the alliance. According to the poll, most of the respondents (26 per cent) believe that NATO’s mission is to protect the international interests of the United States, 24 per cent think NATO fights against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, while 21 per cent think the alliance allows aggressive military action against other countries and fights drug traffickers and organized crime. Only 17 per cent of respondents perceive NATO as a peacekeeper.

NATO was originally formed in 1949 as an agreement of collaboration designed to prevent a possible attack from the Soviet Union on North America or Western Europe during the Cold War. In March 2004, NATO added seven more nations, six of which were once members of the Warsaw Pact — a military alliance of Eastern European Soviet countries.

Russia began actively to cooperate with NATO after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The NATO-Russia council was established in 2002 in an effort to exchange information on terrorism and security issues.

Yesterday in Moscow, NATO secretary-general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer called on Russia to enact “closer cooperation and exchange of views” with the military alliance. Scheffer added that the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction remains “a common danger for both Russia and NATO.”

Over the past few weeks, several conferences aimed at introducing Russians to NATO have been interrupted by protest rallies.
