Feng Riyao / Radio Free Asia | May 26 2006

China's first compensation case of Polyacrylamide Gel (PAAG) victim concluded at the Shenzhen Municipal Intermediate People's Court on Tuesday May 22, 2006. It was estimated that the judiciary will give a ruling in a month's time. However, two Hong Kong TV reporters were beaten by hospital personnel when they went to the hospital for an interview.

The two reporters were from Hong Kong Cable TV Ltd. and Asia Television Ltd. When they were conducting interview at the doorstep of the Fuhua Plastic and Aesthetic Hospital they were surrounded by five or six people who claimed to be hospital personnel, the reporter from Asia Television was struck and kicked by three people he then called the police for help, The report from Hong Kong Cable TV was also pushed and struck and people even grabbed his mobile to prevent him from calling police.

According to a police from Huangbei Police Station in Shenzhen who was on duty at the time, he denied anyone was attacked or beaten and suggested the incident was just a dispute between hospital personnel and reporters, and the authorities will investigate the matter in the normal processes.

But the Hong Kong Journalists Association was not impressed by the police statement and intensely condemned the savage and illegal behavior as two reporters were beaten while interviewing in Shenzhen. The association sent a letter to Xu Zongheng, the Shenzhen City Mayor, and asked him to thoroughly investigate the incident and make public the result.

China's first PAAG victim compensation case was held in court on Tuesday afternoon. The prosecution attorney Pu Zhiqiang, said that the hearing went smoothly and the judiciary will give a ruling in a month's time. He said that he was confident of winning the lawsuit and indicated it showed the material to be unsafe and the Chinese government has prohibited the use of Polyacrylamide Gel so-called PAAG.

However, the defense counsel indicated there are more than 20 different types (brands) under the title of PAGG and there were also fake products on the market, and the plaintiff could not prove that the brand brought about the sequela is related to her operation in the Fuhua Plastic and Aesthetic Hospital.

Several of the victims who had sequela after injecting PAAG also attended the court as observers. Miss Zhang, the plaintiff, when interviewed, said she was injected with PAGG into her forehead to make it fuller four years ago at the Fuhua Plastic and Aesthetic Hospital but she experienced vomiting, face twitching a sensation of liquid flowing from her forehead toward her face. She underwent two operations but the PAAG could not be removed thoroughly and she often suffered headaches. She asked the hospital to compensate 210,000 RMB (approximately US$26,250) for her mental and physical damage. She indicated that she had separately appealed to the State Bureau for Letters and Calls and the provincial Public Health Office but they paid no attention

The State Drug Administration issued a prohibition at the end of last month (April) to stop the production, sale and use of PAGG products.

In Hong Kong, there were at least 53 women suffering from PAAG after injecting it into breast implants, six of them had to have their breasts removed. It was reported that 90 percent of the operations were performed in China.
