ACLU seeks Greensboro police surveillance records

AP | May 24 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina has requested information from the Greensboro Police Department on its surveillance of political groups.

The ACLU submitted the request May 15 on behalf of The World Can't Wait NC, which organized a rally against President Bush in January, and five protesters.

Seven protesters were arrested at the rally for charges that included assault on a public official and carrying a concealed weapon.

The ACLU wants surveillance records on both the organization and the protesters, along with police guidelines for surveillance.

Bruce Burch, 36, a protester who was named in the request, said the information should be public.

"People should know if, when they exercise their First Amendment Rights, their picture may be taken and their names put in a database for God knows what," he said.
