Australian PM: War on Iran a last resort

The Australian | May 21 2006

WAR would be a last resort to stop Iran from pursuing its nuclear ambitions, Prime Minister John Howard said.

Iran was refusing to suspend its nuclear enrichment program, despite an offer of incentives from the EU to halt the work.

The EU and US believed Iran was secretly developing atomic weapons under cover of a civilian nuclear energy program and they wanted the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on the renegade nation if it rejected the package,

Iran said its atomic program was solely aimed at the peaceful generation of electricity.

Mr Howard said military action would only ever be a last resort against Iran.

"I don't want military action, nobody wants military action ever," he told CNN.

"It's always a last resort and I think we should try very hard to solve this issue diplomatically and that is certainly Australia's very strong position."

Mr Howard said he preferred the matter be dealt with through the UN.

"I think what should happen is that the United Nations system should be allowed to work," he said.

"I believe that the United Nations process now under way should be seen through.

"Both America and Australia believe in trying to achieve a diplomatic solution to this very difficult problem, and I think in the first instance we should exhaust the United Nations process before we start examining alternative approaches."
