Pakistan rubbishes British claim that it shelters Taliban Pakistan's military Friday rubbished a British army officer's "ludicrous" claim that Taliban militants were launching attacks in Afghanistan from its side of the border. A Pakistani military statement said that Colonel Chris Vernon, chief of staff for British forces in southern Afghanistan, was "trumpeting irrationally" because of his own army's incompetence. "Instead of speaking to media, it would have been appropriate if Colonel Vernon provided actionable and real time intelligence," the statement said. Vernon was quoted by Britain's Guardian newspaper on Friday as saying that Taliban leaders were coordinating their campaign of violence in Afghanistan from the Pakistani city of Quetta. "The thinking piece of the Taliban is out of Quetta in Pakistan. It's the major headquarters," he told the newspaper. "They use it to run a series of networks in Afghanistan." "This media projection only reflects their own inadequacy to deal with the situation and they start trumpeting irrationally when they feel the heat," the statement said. The military statement said Pakistan was committed to rooting out terrorism. "We have suffered heavily in the process, it is disappointing when such baseless statements are issued which are nothing but figment of someone's imagination." Pakistan says it has 80,000 troops along the border with Afghanistan combating militants who fled across the border after the fall of the Taliban in late 2001. It says it has killed around 1,000 insurgents since 2002 and has lost more than 600 of its own soldiers. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
