Supreme Court Justice tells legal group that plan to oversee judges 'like the Soviet Union' In a little noticed AP article Tuesday evening, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was quoted as telling a gathering of the American Bar Association that a Republican proposal to create a judiciary oversight inspector sounds "very much like the Soviet Union was," RAW STORY has learned. According to AP, she said that a proposal by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) to set up a watchdog overseeing the federal courts was a "really scary idea." "My sense now is that the judiciary is under assault in a way that I haven't seen before," she said. AP: "As an example, she mentioned proposals by senior Republicans who want an inspector general to police judges' acceptance of free trips or their possible financial interests with groups that could appear before them." "It sounds to me very much like the Soviet Union was .... That's a really scary idea," Ginsburg remarked. The justice was appointed by Clinton in 1993. According to AP, Grassley's plan "would create an inspector general to oversee federal courts including the Supreme Court. The inspector general would be directed to report any judicial misconduct to the Justice Department." The article notes that House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has floated another plan "to cover lower federal courts only." --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
