License Plate Bar Code: Big Brother or Crime Fighting Technique? My Eyewitness News | May 2 2006 Herman Young just got his first look at the new Tennessee license plate when he went to renew his tags. On it, he found a few surprises such as holograms hidden in the plate. "They say they put all of those features in there to make sure it couldn't be reproduced," Young says. There is also a bar code on the plate. In the future, officers can scan it and get all of your personal information. Young likes the idea. "It's a good thing for the police for if your car gets stole, or other things like car jacking and all that stuff," he says. A man who would only identify himself as "Aaron" is not so quick to agree. "If they scan my tags, I don't know if they're gonna bother me because of my past. That's what worries me. It's kinda like invasion of privacy. But if its gonna cut down on crime, I think its a good idea," Aaron tells us. Charles Nichols, with the Shelby County Clerks Office says the idea is still in its early stages. "It would be quicker operationally, but where the money would come from for all of these scanners, I've gotta see that. It'll be light years down the road," he tells us. Nebraska, Indiana and New Jersey are among other state implementing this new bar code program. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
