Residents of rural Wales to face webcam quiz to get a passport

Western Mail | May 1 2006

A NETWORK of Government webcams will be set up across rural Wales to interview people who want to apply for a passport.

The Home Office wants all new applicants for passports to be interviewed in a bid to cut down on foreign criminals fraudulently obtaining UK documents. But under the initial plans those living in North, Mid and West Wales faced long journeys to Liverpool, Swansea or Newport for the face-to-face questioning.

A revised scheme now proposes centres in Wrexham and Aberystwyth and webcams for those who cannot realistically get there. The webcams are likely to be in post offices or council buildings.

No-one who already holds a passport will be affected, but there were concerns that first applicants - often teenagers or students - would struggle to meet the cost of travelling to interview centres.

The Home Office says the plan to interview new applicants has become necessary as so many fraudulent claims are made. A spokesman said, "We appreciate it's not convenient but we are one of the few countries that doesn't do this. It is something you do once every 10 years and we have been very clear that there is a price for all these extra security measures."
