ACLU steps up pressure on Pentagon surveillance

AP | March 7 2006

SAN FRANCISCO The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California plans to announce new efforts today to uncover Pentagon documents on the anti-war activities of U-C students.

A Pentagon program, called Threat and Local Observation Notice or TALON, was started in 2003 to keep track of people and groups with potential ties to terrorism.

The A-C-L-U had filed a Freedom of Information Act request earlier this month on behalf of U-C Santa Cruz and Cal Berkeley students.

Last April, student groups on those campuses held rallies protesting military recruitment. The events later showed up on a Department of Defense database as threatening activities.
