Russia Still Upbeat on Nuclear Deal With Iran — Minister

Mos News | March 3 2006

Russia and Iran have not yet come to agreement about setting up a joint venture (to enrich uranium), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov admitted Friday. However, Russia still hopes on the positive outcome of further talks with Tehran, he added.

“The Moscow talks with the Iranian delegation were a part of common efforts to settle the problem,” he said. “Now we must adopt terms which will not make the work of the IAEA in Iran more difficult.”

He said that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak was currently in Vienna, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

“Contacts are thus continuing and will be continued,” Lavrov said. “There are always opportunities for reaching agreement,” the minister said. “If the components are coordinated, namely if Iran resumes the moratorium and there is a committed discussion of the issue of setting up the joint venture, there will be a positive result.”

“We have not yet reached this result, but we are working in that direction,” the Russian foreign minister underlined.
