Iran Can Build Nuclear Bomb Within 5 Years — Russian Think Tank

Mos News | March 3 2006

Iran will get nuclear weapons within five years, a Russian think tank, the Foreign and Defense Policy Council, said in its report.

“A minority of experts think that we are talking about a period of six months to two years, but the majority lean towards several years (up to five),” the council’s analytical report was quoted by Interfax as saying. It adds that “the world should start learning to live with a nuclear Iran now”.

The report says that although Iran acquiring nuclear weapons will have a negative effect on Russia’s security, the consequences will not be catastrophic as long as Iran remains stable. “Tehran will not use weapons of mass destruction or pass nuclear technology to other countries, and certainly not to terrorist organizations,” the council says.

The report also suggests that the acquisition of a nuclear bomb by Iran would push Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt towards the creation of their own nuclear weapons.

On Feb. 1 talks between Russian and Iranian negotiators on a Russian plan for joint uranium enrichment have ended with a “general” agreement, but there must be new meetings to work out outstanding issues, Tehran officials said. There had been no breakthrough in the talks so far, the Russian side claims.

Russia, the U.S. and the European Union have said the Russian proposal would be worthwhile only if it meant Iran stopped all enrichment activities on its own soil.
