Hillary Clinton's lead over Kentucky Senator Rand Paul in a potential presidential run off has almost halved in the space of three months, with a new Zogby poll illustrating how recent scandals have hurt the former First Lady.

A new survey of likely voters conducted June 27-29 shows that Clinton's lead over Paul has plummeted from 21 points in March (53% to 32%) to just 12 points (48% to 36%).

Clinton's decline can be attributed to a number of scandals that have emerged in recent months, most notably the release of an audio tape in which Hillary boasted about representing a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl. The former Secretary of State also riled conservatives recently when she asserted that gun control opponents should not be allowed to hold an opinion that “terrorizes” America.

According to pollster John Zogby, Hillary's advantage over her rivals is likely to continue to evaporate because she will struggle to increase her support base.

"Some pundits suggest that it is good that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is airing her dirty linen and making her campaign mistakes now with over two years to go until the 2016 elections," writes Zogby. "Others, me included, argue that this lackluster performance is not likely to go away."

In a hypothetical run off against Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Clinton's lead has also narrowed to 12 points (47% to 35%), with Clinton having led Bush by 18 points in March.

The figures clearly emphasize how Senator Paul is building early momentum with the 2016 election still more than two years away.

Although Paul has not confirmed that he will throw his hat in the ring, asserting that he will make a decision after this year's mid-terms, back in March he became the first Republican to assemble a network in all 50 states.
