Syria seals border with Lebanon

Syrian authorities have closed a border crossing with northeastern Lebanon without giving a reason, amid earlier closure of two other crossings.

According to Lebanese security officials, the Wednesday closure of the Qaa-Jousseh crossing has left only one land border open between the two sides- the main Beirut-Damascus link at Masnaa in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the officials said Syrian officials have told drivers coming from Syria that the crossing would be closed.

Damascus, which has not officially confirmed the move yet, had threatened to close its land borders with Lebanon if an international force is deployed along the boundary based on a UN Security Council resolution passed at the end of last summer's 33-day war between Lebanon's Hezbollah and Israel.

Syria closed two other crossings with northern Lebanon after the May 20 outbreak of clashes between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam gunmen in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared, announcing safety measures as the reason.

A full closure of Syrian-Lebanese borders would cut Beirut's land links with the Arab world and could severely hurt its economy.
