Mexico's Government Helps Illegal Immigrants in U.S. John F. McManus The Mexican consulate in Los Angeles boasts that it has helped 300,000 Mexicans gain access to medical care provided "free" of charge to anyone who can't pay for it. The cost approaches half a billion dollars in the Los Angeles area and $1.1 billion for the state of California alone. In like manner, consulates in Chicago, Houston, San Diego, and Indiana are assisting illegal Mexican immigrants with a program called "health windows" ("ventanillas de salud" in Spanish). When the immigrants are questioned as they seek such a benefit, the consular officials provide them with legal assistance. The non-partisan Judicial Watch organization reports that the Mexican government is "working hard" to expand this type of outreach program. Mexican officials are instructing all 47 of their consulates in our nation to inform illegal immigrants of the availability of various benefits.
Medical care is not the only benefit provided to illegal immigrants. Many receive help with housing, education, food, and other "freebies" at taxpayer expense. Americans who promote amnesty programs and open borders stress that poor Mexicans entering our country are only seeking a job that no American will fill. But Mexican officials are delighted to know that the cost of caring for their indigent millions is being transferred to the American taxpayer. Our own government officials, including President Bush and the State Department, should demand that this looting of the American people cease immediately. Notice should be sent to the Mexican government that such action by their consular officials will no longer be tolerated. If it not stopped, those consulates should be closed down. Only a few years ago, Mexico's government produced pamphlets showing poor Mexicans how to cross the border into the United States. That significantly unfriendly act on the part of a neighboring government has now been followed by the current activity of these consular officials. Still, the Bush administration and many members of Congress look the other way while actually considering legislation that will make this problem and its huge cost grow even worse. One simple solution to ease the illegal immigration problem is to put and end to the "freebies" given to those who enter our nation illegally. If that were done, the flood of immigration would stop and many who are already here would go back to Mexico.
