Chavez defies US embargo with Russian jet deal

London Telegraph | June 16 2006

Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's fiery president, has thumbed his nose at an American military embargo by buying 24 Russian fighters.

He boasted that they could strike American aircraft carriers from a distance of more than 100 miles.

The move will infuriate the White House, although its anger is less likely to be directed at its least favourite South American leader than at the Kremlin, which has now signed its second arms deal with Venezuela since the ban was imposed in April.

The new deal was completed a fortnight after Russia agreed to build munitions factories in Venezuela, leading to speculation that it is trying to regain some of its Cold War influence in America's back yard.

Before the embargo, which carries no obligation on other countries, it had agreed to deliver attack helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles.

Relations between Moscow and Washington are at a low ebb and the jet deal will cause further strain when George W Bush and Vladimir Putin meet at next month's G8 summit in St Petersburg.
