20,000 people ordered to clear out Florida as Alberto comes closer Forecasters posted a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast and a tropical storm warning from north of Daytona Beach to the Georgia-South Carolina line. It is expected to cross through Florida and into Georgia. More than 20-thousand people along Florida's Gulf Coast were ordered to clear out on Monday as Alberto - the first tropical storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season - unexpectedly picked up steam and threatened to come ashore as a hurricane. Forecasters posted a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast and a tropical storm warning from north of Daytona Beach to the Georgia-South Carolina line. Alberto, which could begin battering the Gulf coast early on Tuesday, was expected to cross through Florida and into Georgia. It started as a tropical depression on Saturday but the storm's winds accelerated with startling speed from 50 miles (80 kilometres) per hour to 112 miles per hour in just three hours on Monday morning. The minimum for a hurricane is 74 miles (120 kilometres) per hour. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Monday it had evacuation buses and emergency supplies standing by, but state officials in the affected areas had not asked for immediate help. Forecasters said Alberto would probably become only a weak Category 1 hurricane, meaning winds of 74 miles (120 kilometres) per hour to 95 miles (153 kilometres) per hour, because the warm water from which hurricanes draw their strength is not particularly deep in the area. At 2 a.m. local time (0600 GMT), Alberto was centered about 85 miles (137 kilometres) west-southeast of Cedar Key, and was moving northeast near 10 miles (16 kilometres) per hour, the National Hurricane Centre said. Its top sustained winds were at 65 miles (105 kilometres) per hour. --------------------------------------------------- Prison Planet.tv: The Premier Multimedia Subscription Package: Download and Share the Truth!
