German police tell English fans they will be sent home for making Nazi salutes John Steele / London Telegraph | June 1st 2006 Violent and offensive hooligans will be met with zero tolerance by police in Germany at the World Cup, a senior German police officer said yesterday. Dietmar Wolf, a senior captain at Germany's federal police headquarters, said that fans who made Nazi salutes would be sent home and those who persisted in singing offensive songs would be given warnings and might be banned from certain areas. The banned songs include one popular among England fans about shooting down German planes. It became clear during a briefing by Capt Wolf in London yesterday that British officers would be working alongside their German counterparts to defuse trouble before it escalates. The British officers would have the same powers as the German police, Capt Wolf said. He added: "They will have power to question, power to interview and if necessary, power to detain someone. But they will all be working with a German police officer."A total of 46 uniformed British officers are being schooled by their German counterparts in London this week. Capt Wolf said: "To hooligans there is zero tolerance." However, he added: "We won't arrest someone for singing a song. If they are singing very specific songs we will warn them to stop this, and perhaps ban them from the area." The German authorities hope that British police will play a vital role in tense situations. Capt Wolf, said, however, that the biggest concern was not English fans but the potential for violence by hooligans from Poland. British police said yesterday that some football hooligans had failed to comply with orders to hand in their passports ahead of the World Cup. A deadline of 5pm on Tuesday was set for 3,286 people to submit their passports. Hampshire Police said that 18 out of 168 people in their area had failed to do so. ---------------------------------------------------
