MERRIMACK – Town officials yesterday announced that they are adding a motorcade to Toll Revolt Day that will include a parade of cars traveling in a circuit through tolls at three exits, with passengers casting pennies into the baskets to express their protest.

Merrimack residents say they pay an unfairly high percentage of tolls, and studies have shown rates as high as 42 cents a mile, compared to the average of 3 cents a mile on the turnpike overall.

"We need to band together to bring attention to the unfair tax burden Merrimack citizens bear," said council Chairman David McCray.

The town council last week voted unanimously to proclaim Aug. 27 Toll Revolt Day, with residents and commuters asked to pitch only pennies into the baskets at the tolls.

The council yesterday upped the ante, saying that while many of residents will toss pennies on their way to work, a noontime rally at Abbie Griffin Park will enable non-commuters to join the rally.
